We have celebrated 5 of the last 6 Christmases in G, so it was very special to be here with family, although we also see how far 'out of touch' with American Christmas culture our kids are. Ir is the only one who could remember a Christmas in America. It led to some funny moments:
At a song and dance celebration, A guy in a 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer' costume burst out the side door and started greeting the kids in the first row. J was in the first chair and burst into a terrified scream at seeing this monstrosity approaching him.
Grandpa read a Christmas story to A, and on one page pointed out to her "There's Santa Claus!" She looked at him blankly and apparently had no idea who this Santa Claus might be.
We prepared for the day with a family devotional on the goodness and dangers of toys. I asked how toys could be dangerous, and E gave a very good answer about how toys could become idols. I asked A about her understanding of E's answer. She recapitulated it by saying that there was a danger that toys could become statues.
Finally, my brother marked two boxes of lego gifts for Tara and me. This was fine except that when Tara opened 'her legos' the kids were all taken aback. A especially was quite disturbed, explaining to all who would listen that legos were for kids.
